Animal Adoption

In an effort to protect the health of our community members and staff, following guidance from state and local health officials, the Newport Beach Animal Shelter is currently closed to the public.  Certain time-sensitive services, such as redemption of animals by their owners, can be provided by appointment only.  The City is continuously re-evaluating the COVID-19 risk and our ability to provide other services, such as adoptions of animals in our care, may depend on the most recent guidance received.  Please call the shelter at (949) 718-3454 to inquire about making an appointment for services.  Community members wishing to donate items to the shelter may leave the items outside of the shelter gate for collection.  Thank you for your support and understanding.

Current Pet Adoption Fee Schedule:

How do I Adopt a Pet?

Animals available for adoption from the City of Newport Beach are located on Petango.com, the Newport Beach Animal Shelter Facebook and Instagram pages, and AdoptAPet.com. Petango.com contains a live listing that is updated in real time. If you see an animal you would like to meet and possibly adopt, please visit the shelter between the hours of 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Tuesday-Sunday. The shelter is closed on Mondays.

May we suggest that your first step to adopting any animal should be the selection of the breed of dog or cat that will best suit you and your family needs. Itís always wise to do a little homework first, read books or magazines that give detailed information about the various attributes or deficiencies of the various breeds that are of interest to you.

Once you have narrowed your list of potential breeds and have decided on the approximate age group, you can begin your search for the dog, puppy, cat or kitten thatís just right for you.

Hundreds of thousands of homeless animals find their way to Animal Shelters across the county. Because of this, we highly recommend that your adoption efforts start at one of these Animal Shelters.

Animal Adoption Application:

The adoption process begins with the completion of an Animal Adoption Application form. Applications can be completed at any time during and after the required stray holding period. NO APPLICATION will be approved for adoption until the animal has been held for the entire stray holding period.
